A fatal single-vehicle crash shut down southbound U.S. 101 near the Crocker Lane and Old Gilroy Street area, just south of Gilroy, early Sunday morning. According to California Highway Patrol logs, the crash occurred at 3:57 a.m. when a vehicle left the freeway, rolled over and became pinned against a chain-link fence. The impact scattered debris across the area and trapped the driver inside the wreckage. Gilroy police and fire crews responded to the scene, working to extricate the driver. A coroner was requested, and the CHP later initiated a tow response. Authorities have not released the identity of the victim or information regarding what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway. The crash remains under active investigation by the CHP.
